A presentation set of six silver teaspoons made by the Moscow silversmith Vasily Ivanovich Andreev between 1908 and 1917. The set is a characteristic example of Russian silver from the late Imperial period and demonstrates the high standard of Moscow jewellery production in the early 20th century.
The spoons are crafted in 84 zolotnik silver using casting and stamping techniques. The handles are decorated with polychrome opaque champlevé enamel forming a refined floral ornament in a rich and vibrant palette. The contrast between the brightly coloured enamel, the silver surface and the surviving traces of gilding lends the pieces a distinctive decorative character associated with the finest Moscow enamelling workshops of the period.
The set is preserved in its original wooden fitted case lined with fabric and made specifically for these spoons. The survival of the original case considerably enhances the set’s collectable appeal, historical significance and rarity.
Hallmarks: Oval assay mark comprising the silver standard «84», a female head in a kokoshnik facing left, and the initials «ИЛ». Moscow District Assay Office. Assay master: Ivan Sergeyevich Lebedkin. Period of use of the hallmark: 1908-1917.
Maker’s mark: the initials «В.А.» with a full stop, struck within a rectangular cartouche, for the Moscow silversmith Vasily Ivanovich Andreev, active between 1908 and 1917.
