An elegant Meissen porcelain vase, produced in the early 20th century after a model by Ernst August Leuteritz (1818–1893), one of the foremost porcelain modellers of the Historicist period.
The vase is distinguished by its harmonious classical proportions and elaborate sculptural decoration. The amphora-shaped body rests on a tall, moulded pedestal foot with fluted relief decoration and gilding. The neck is finished in a rich cobalt-blue ground and surmounted by a gilt relief border.
Of particular decorative distinction are the two tall handles formed as intertwined serpents, their gracefully curved bodies creating symmetrical compositions on either side of the vase. The finely modelled scales and elegant curves demonstrate the exceptional craftsmanship of Meissen`s porcelain modellers.
The white porcelain body is delicately painted in polychrome overglaze enamels with a floral bouquet centred on a full-blown pink rose, surrounded by cornflowers, smaller wildflowers and green foliage. The composition is distinguished by subtle tonal gradations and the naturalistic rendering of the petals.
Rich gilding on the relief elements, foot and decorative borders creates a striking contrast with the cobalt-blue ground and delicate floral painting, emphasising the vase`s distinguished ornamental character.
Marks: Underglaze-blue crossed swords mark of the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory to the underside. The execution of the mark corresponds to a historical type used before 1924.
