This original coloured glass sculpture, Sailor, was created in Riga by the renowned glass artist Anatoly Grishchenko (born 1946). The work belongs to the artists celebrated Sailors series, in which expressive anthropomorphic figures combine decorative stylisation, vivid emotional character and exceptional mastery of contemporary studio glass.
The sculpture is executed in free hot-worked multilayer coloured glass. The elongated head is modelled with boldly sculpted facial features, including a prominent red nose, applied expressive eyes, relief lips and a distinctive wide-brimmed sailors hat in deep green glass surmounted by a red finial. The internal structure of the glass is enriched with numerous trapped air bubbles and subtle chromatic transitions, creating remarkable optical depth and an ever-changing interplay of light. The composition is mounted on a substantial transparent cobalt-blue glass base, reinforcing its sculptural presence and visual balance.
The work is a characteristic example of Anatoly Grishchenkos artistic language, in which the traditions of European studio glass merge with expressive sculptural modelling and an unmistakably individual decorative vocabulary. The sculpture represents an important collectible example of contemporary art glass and would make a distinguished addition to both private and museum collections.
