An icon of Our Lady of Kazan, created in Russia in the mid-19th century. The image is executed in the traditions of the Russian icon-painting school, using the classical technique of tempera painting on gesso ground with gilding. The composition follows one of the most revered iconographic types of the Mother of God, the Hodegetria, where the Virgin Mary is depicted with the Christ Child, facing the viewer in a silent spiritual dialogue.
The faces of the Mother of God and Christ the Saviour are rendered with exceptional softness and inner contemplation, characteristic of Russian icon painting of the 19th century. The delicate modelling of facial features, restrained colour palette and expressive gaze emphasise the idea of divine intercession, mercy and grace.
The background of the icon is covered with gold leaf, creating an effect of sacred radiance and enhancing the solemn perception of the image. The icon is housed in a decorative kiot with lacquered polychrome decoration, serving both a protective and an artistic framing function.
