A rectangular silver cigarette case with shaped, undulating edges, executed in an expressive Neo-Rococo style. Both sides of the case are densely engraved with scrolling foliate ornament, creating an intricate shimmering ground for the applied gold decoration.
The composition of the cover is articulated by prominent gold rocailles, stylised leaves, scrolls and flowering stems symmetrically distributed across the surface. At the centre is a smooth gold cartouche in the form of a curved scroll, left vacant for the addition of an owner`s monogram or commemorative inscription. The contrast between the polished gold and the finely engraved silver ground enhances the decorative depth of the composition.
The sides are embellished with a repeating pattern of stylised shells and fan-shaped motifs. The cigarette case is fitted with a hinged cover and clasp, while the interior surface is left plain. The ornamental vocabulary derives from 18th-century Rococo, reinterpreted by decorative arts craftsmen during the second half of the 19th century.
