NAPOLEON III STYLE GILT BRONZE AND GLASS CENTREPIECE. ESCALIER DE CRISTAL, PARIS. FRANCE, SECOND HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY

An exceptional French centrepiece dating from the second half of the nineteenth century, executed in finely gilt bronze and clear glass in the Napoleon III style. The composition is crowned by a broad circular bowl of colourless glass, delicately engraved with concentric ornamental bands, scrolling foliate motifs and a radiant central rosette.

The bowl is supported by a tall fluted pedestal encircled by four sculptural winged putti. Each putto is depicted in a relaxed, animated pose, holding attributes of the Bacchic cult, including clusters of grapes and vine leaves symbolising abundance, fertility and celebration. The modelling of the figures displays the refined sculptural quality associated with the finest Parisian bronze foundries of the Napoleon III period.

The circular base, finished with a moulded rim, rests upon three boldly cast supports ornamented with lion masks. The striking contrast between the transparency of the engraved glass and the rich gilding of the bronze lends the composition exceptional visual presence, making it an impressive focal point for a dining table, console or mantelpiece. By virtue of its artistic execution, quality of bronze casting and overall design, the piece corresponds to the production of the celebrated Parisian house Escalier de Cristal, one of the foremost manufacturers of luxury decorative objects during the second half of the nineteenth century.
