A rare silver figure of a monkey by Mario Buccellati represents one of the finest examples of cabinet-scale animal sculpture produced by the celebrated Milanese jewellery house. Entirely handcrafted in sterling silver (925), the sculpture demonstrates the exceptional mastery of traditional Italian techniques of precious metalworking for which Buccellati has long been renowned.

The figure is distinguished by its remarkable realism and refined sculptural modelling. The artist has captured the lively character of the animal with extraordinary sensitivity, conveying its expressive facial features and natural posture. Particularly striking is the treatment of the fur: each strand has been individually engraved and chased by hand, creating the illusion of a soft, natural coat. The subtle contrast between the finely textured matte surface and the carefully burnished facial features and extremities enhances both the sculptural volume and the expressive quality of the composition.

Combining naturalistic observation with the gentle humour characteristic of Buccellatis finest animal sculptures, this work exemplifies the houses unparalleled craftsmanship and artistic sophistication. Cabinet sculptures of this quality were produced only in limited numbers and today are highly sought after by collectors of Buccellati works as well as connoisseurs of twentieth-century European decorative arts.
