A magnificent fireplace fender executed in cast, chased and gilt bronze in the Neo-Rococo style. Its elegant undulating composition displays the expressive asymmetry and richly sculptural modelling characteristic of French decorative arts during the second half of the nineteenth century. The central section is adorned with an openwork rocaille cartouche composed of intertwined acanthus scrolls, stylised shell motifs and luxuriant foliate ornament. The side sections flow seamlessly into substantial corner supports surmounted by ornamental covered urn finials with flaming finials, conceived in the finest tradition of French artistic bronze. The bases are lavishly embellished with rocaille scrollwork, volutes and intricate pierced bronze ornamentation, lending remarkable visual lightness to the monumentality of the design. Such fireplace fenders were intended not only to prevent burning embers from escaping the hearth but also to form an integral part of an elegant chimney-piece ensemble, harmoniously complementing mantel clocks, candelabra and fire screens. The exceptional quality of the bronze casting, refined chasing and rich gilding identifies this piece as a distinguished example of French decorative arts from the closing decades of the nineteenth century.
