A Swedish naval officer`s sabre, Model 1876, representing a distinguished example of ceremonial and service edged weaponry of the Royal Swedish Navy from the last quarter of the nineteenth century. The sabre combines restrained military elegance with refined craftsmanship characteristic of Scandinavian officer`s arms.
The straight single edged steel blade is finely etched with scrolling foliage and military decorative motifs. The ricasso bears the maker`s mark E. Svalling, Eskilstuna, one of Sweden`s renowned sword manufacturers of the second half of the nineteenth century.
The gilt brass hilt is richly decorated with chased foliate ornament. The guard incorporates a prominent anchor, symbolising naval service. The pommel is modelled as a lion`s head, a traditional feature of Swedish officer`s swords of the period. The grip is covered with shagreen and bound with twisted wire. The sabre retains its original gold bullion officer`s sword knot.
The original leather scabbard is fitted with gilt brass mounts comprising the locket, chape and suspension rings.
Marks: Maker`s mark E. Svalling, Eskilstuna on the ricasso.
Dimensions: Height: 90 cm. Width: 14 cm. Length: 90 cm.
Condition: Very good condition. Minor signs of age and use consistent with the period. The etched blade, gilt hilt, leather scabbard and original sword knot are well preserved.
