A Russian silver snuffbox of rectangular form with rounded corners, made in Moscow in the first half of the 19th century. The case is distinguished by its restrained proportions and rich niello decoration extending across the lid, side panels and ends.
The ornament is composed of rhythmically interlaced scrolling foliage, stylised leaves, tendrils and floral motifs. The bright surfaces of the engraved silver contrast strikingly with the deep black tones of the niello, lending the design graphic definition and visual depth. The decoration flows freely across the surface of the case, accentuating its rounded corners and compact architectural form.
The hinged lid opens to reveal a gilt interior, creating a characteristic contrast between the warm golden surface within and the cool silver and black decoration of the exterior. The combination of niello, engraving and gilding attests to the accomplished decorative workmanship of the piece.
Marks: Maker`s mark «НФБ», the maker unidentified. Moscow assay mark with «84» standard and the Moscow city emblem depicting Saint George on horseback slaying the dragon with his spear. The «84» mark corresponds to the Russian zolotnik standard, equivalent to approximately 875 silver.
