This gold Five Roubles coin, struck in 1898 during the reign of Emperor Nicholas II, is one of the most sought after examples of late nineteenth century Russian imperial gold coinage. Minted at the Saint Petersburg Mint, it was produced in 900 standard gold in accordance with the monetary reform introduced by Sergei Witte, which established the gold standard in the Russian Empire. The obverse bears the right facing profile portrait of Emperor Nicholas II encircled by the official legend. The reverse displays the Imperial State Coat of Arms, the double headed eagle with the regalia of the Russian Empire, together with the denomination and the date of issue. The edge is ornamented. The present example is preserved in XF (Extremely Fine) condition, retaining a substantial proportion of its original mint relief and sharply defined details.
