An elegant French ewer dating from the early 20th century, crafted in clear cut crystal and mounted in silver. The tall, pear-shaped body, gently widening towards the base, is decorated with geometric diamond cutting, vertical facets and radiating ornament, producing a striking play of reflected light.

The silver-mounted neck is designed in the Neoclassical spirit, with garlands, medallions and repoussé foliate motifs. The architectural rigour of the composition is softened by the fluidly modelled handle and the freer treatment of detail characteristic of Art Nouveau decorative arts. The hinged cover is surmounted by a tall bud-shaped finial and displays a tiered outline reminiscent of an Oriental tent.

The ewer embodies the synthesis of Neoclassicism and Art Nouveau characteristic of the turn of the 20th century, combining clarity of proportion, symmetry and classical ornament with a dynamic silhouette and exotic decorative accents.
