Gold coin of 5 roubles, struck in 1888 during the reign of Emperor Alexander III. Minted in 900 standard gold at the Saint Petersburg Mint, the coin belongs to the regular circulating gold coinage of the Russian Empire in the second half of the nineteenth century. The obverse bears the right-facing profile portrait of Emperor Alexander III, surrounded by the inscription: «Б. М. АЛЕКСАНДРЪ III ИМПЕРАТОРЪ И САМОДЕРЖЕЦЪ ВСЕРОССІЙСКІЙ» (By the Grace of God, Alexander III, Emperor and Autocrat of All Russia). The reverse displays the Imperial coat of arms of the Russian Empire, a double-headed eagle beneath three Imperial crowns, bearing the arms of the Tsardoms and Grand Duchies upon its wings and the shield of Saint George on its breast. Below the Imperial eagle are the denomination 5 РУБЛЕЙ (5 Roubles) and the date 1888.
