A finely carved hardstone miniature depicting a rhinoceros, executed in the style of Fabergé from natural nephrite, dating to the 20th century. The sculpture portrays the animal in an alert stance with its legs firmly splayed, as if pausing to listen to the sounds of the savannah. The slightly raised tail lends the composition a subtle sense of animation and understated humour.

The compact yet expressive modelling successfully conveys the rhinoceross formidable mass and quiet strength. Carefully selected nephrite, with its natural tonal variations, convincingly evokes the texture of the animals thick hide. The highly polished surface enhances the depth of colour and reveals the inherent beauty of the stone. The horn is carved from bone, creating a refined contrast with the rich green nephrite.

The work continues the traditions of the Russian hardstone carving school inspired by the celebrated animal sculptures of the House of Fabergé, where exceptional importance was attached to the artistic qualities of ornamental stone, restrained modelling, and the expressive interpretation of animal subjects.

RUSSIAN HARDSTONE CARVING ART
Russian hardstone carving art emerged as an independent branch of the decorative and applied arts on the basis of the Ural tradition of hardstone working and reached full maturity at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. During this period, stone was established as the principal bearer of the artistic image, while sculptural miniatures and decorative plastic works attained museum status. A decisive role in the institutionalization and artistic consolidation of this field was played by major artistic and industrial centers, above all the hardstone carving production system of Fabergé.
