ENGLISH SILVER-PLATED WINE COOLER. ENGLAND. LATE 19TH CENTURY

An impressive English silver-plated wine cooler executed in the traditions of late Victorian decorative metalwork. The monumental form is inspired by organic naturalism, with the base conceived as an unfolding bellflower rising into luxuriant acanthus foliage, vine leaves and medieval ivy. These sculptural botanical motifs continue seamlessly into the boldly modelled side handles, creating a dynamic impression of natural growth emerging directly from the metal.

The main body is enriched with finely chased foliate ornament that extends freely across the surface. This interpretation of decoration is characteristic of the English artistic taste of the second half of the nineteenth century, shaped by the aesthetic ideals of the Pre-Raphaelites and the principles of the Arts and Crafts Movement, which sought to restore craftsmanship, artistic integrity and the beauty of natural forms to the decorative arts.

The front bears an armorial shield engraved with the Latin motto FATO PROVIDENTIA MAJOR, translated as Providence is greater than fate. This heraldic device suggests a commission for a distinguished family or private estate, reinforcing the ceremonial character of the piece. The interior retains its removable cylindrical liner intended to accommodate and chill a wine bottle.

Distinguished by its sculptural modelling, rich botanical ornament and refined workmanship, this wine cooler is an outstanding example of English silver-plated decorative metalwork of the Historicist period, combining practical function with exceptional artistic quality.

Marks: Maker`s mark. Armorial shield engraved with the motto FATO PROVIDENTIA MAJOR.
