ICHIMONJI JINGASA. SAMURAI HELMET HAT. JAPAN, EDO PERIOD, 1603–1867

A lightweight Ichimonji Jingasa samurai hat, executed in the traditional kanshitsu technique of layered lacquer over an organic core. Distinguished by its broad, almost perfectly flat circular profile with a subtly raised central crown, this type of jingasa was intended for everyday military and ceremonial use by samurai while travelling, on patrol, or during official service. The exterior is finished in deep black lacquer displaying an attractive network of natural age craquelure, characteristic of historic Japanese lacquerware. The front is prominently adorned with a finely gilt Maru-ni-mitsu-ōgi-mon family crest depicting three folding fans enclosed within a circular reserve. Flanking the crest are two gilt kanji characters, Hayashi (林), identifying the samurai family to whom the hat belonged. The interior retains its original rich vermilion lacquer finish with a raised rim and is fitted with its original ukebari suspension, padded head cushion and silk fastening cords, ensuring both comfort and stability when worn. This example represents an exceptionally well-preserved element of Edo-period samurai equipment, combining refined lacquer craftsmanship with heraldic symbolism and clear evidence of aristocratic military ownership.

Marks: Gilt family crest Maru-ni-mitsu-ōgi-mon (three folding fans within a circle). Gilt Hayashi (林) kanji inscriptions positioned on either side of the crest.

Condition: Good condition. Natural age craquelure to the lacquer surface consistent with its period. Original interior suspension system and fastening cords preserved.
