An impressive French fire screen by Bouhon, executed in the late nineteenth century in finely cast, chased and gilt bronze with a protective metal mesh screen. Conceived in the Louis XV style, the composition exemplifies the Historicist interpretation of the French Rococo revival, drawing upon the ornamental vocabulary of the eighteenth century. The openwork bronze frame is distinguished by flowing asymmetrical rocaille scrolls, intertwined floral bouquets and an animated silhouette articulated around a decorative central axis. Elegantly curved feet and richly chased ornament demonstrate the exceptional quality of the bronze casting and finishing. The finely woven protective mesh is seamlessly integrated into the elaborate gilt bronze framework, preserving the screens practical function while enhancing its decorative refinement. Fire screens of this calibre formed an integral element of prestigious French interiors during the Belle Époque, serving both as protection from sparks and as an important decorative feature within formal reception rooms.
