An impressive pair of French bronze candlesticks executed in the mid-19th century in the Neo-Renaissance style, distinguished by a sophisticated interpretation of Classical mythology. These works represent an exceptional example of French artistic bronze from the Historicist period, combining sculptural expressiveness with masterful bronze casting, chasing, patination and mercury gilding.

Each candlestick is conceived as a standing faun clad in grapevine foliage and holding abundant clusters of ripe grapes, traditional attributes associated with the cult of Dionysus and the symbolism of fertility, abundance and the vitality of nature. The figures display refined anatomical modelling, dynamic sculptural treatment and remarkable attention to detail. The rich dark patina creates a striking contrast with the brilliant fire-gilding, which accentuates the ornamental details, the architectural bases, capitals and candle sockets.

The circular bases are enriched with finely chased ornamental decoration, while the elegantly gilded candle nozzles complete the composition with architectural balance and refinement. These candlesticks are characteristic productions of French bronze workshops during the Second Empire, when Classical mythology and Renaissance ornamental vocabulary once again became central elements of aristocratic interior decoration.

Combining expressive mythological iconography with the noble interplay of patinated and gilded bronze and an outstanding level of craftsmanship, this pair represents a highly desirable example of nineteenth-century French decorative bronze and would constitute an elegant addition to both classical and historically inspired interiors.
