A pair of decorative gilt-bronze candelabra on dark marble bases, designed to hold a total of eight candles. Conceived as complementary sculptural compositions featuring musical putti, the pair displays the expressive modelling characteristic of 19th-century French decorative arts inspired by the Rococo tradition.
Each candelabrum is centred upon the figure of a putto seated amid an elaborate arrangement of branching foliate stems. In one composition, the putto appears as a conductor, his raised hand caught in an animated gesture; in the other, he is depicted playing a transverse flute. The complementary subjects establish a refined musical dialogue and lend narrative and compositional unity to the ensemble.
From the bases rise gracefully curving bronze branches modelled as stylised stems, foliage and rocaille scrolls, terminating in four candle sockets with decorative drip pans. The flowing silhouette, combined with the interplay of vegetal ornament and sculptural figures, creates a distinctly Rococo Revival composition.
The figures and foliate decoration are mounted upon rectangular dark marble plinths enriched with gilt-bronze elements. The contrast between the deep tone of the stone and the warm brilliance of the gilt bronze accentuates the sculptural modelling and enhances the decorative presence of the ensemble. The candelabra have been electrified.
