SILVER KOVSH WITH CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL. RUSSIA, ST PETERSBURG, LATE 19TH CENTURY

An exquisite silver kovsh in the form of an ancient Russian boat represents a superb example of Russian silversmithing of the late nineteenth century, executed in the Neo-Russian style. Crafted in 84 standard silver with gilt interior details, the vessel is richly decorated with vibrant cloisonné enamel, demonstrating the exceptional craftsmanship of the St Petersburg enamelling workshops.

The elongated body with elegantly raised prow and stern is inspired by the traditional forms of ancient Russian ceremonial vessels. The interior of the bowl and the gracefully curved handle are embellished with an elaborate cloisonné enamel composition. The ornament is composed of intertwined floral scrolls, stylised foliage and geometric motifs executed in rich shades of turquoise, cobalt blue, crimson, white and green.

The central decorative element is a finely modelled Imperial double-headed eagle, the official emblem of the Russian Empire. The eagle is enriched with turquoise cloisonné enamel and outlined with a gilt border, lending the composition a distinguished ceremonial character. The refined colour palette and masterful execution of the enamel decoration place this kovsh among the finest examples of Russian decorative silver produced during the final decades of the nineteenth century.

Such kovshi were created as prestigious presentation pieces, commemorative gifts and ceremonial table objects commissioned by affluent patrons. Today they are highly sought after by museums and discerning collectors of Russian decorative arts.

Hallmarks: Registered makers mark, Cyrillic initials НЗ. Official St Petersburg assay mark depicting the city coat of arms with the 84 silver standard in an oval punch, dating to the late nineteenth century.
