An exquisite Russian silver bonbonnière in the Empire style, crafted in St Petersburg in 1837 by the distinguished Finnish master silversmith Thomas Sohka (1804–1865). This refined work is a characteristic example of Russian decorative silver of the late Empire period, distinguished by its architectural clarity of composition, harmonious proportions and exceptional standard of craftsmanship.
The form is defined by the balanced symmetry and restrained monumentality that are hallmarks of the Empire aesthetic. The bowl rests upon a stable circular foot, while the elegantly modelled handle creates a perfectly balanced silhouette, reinforcing the ceremonial character of the piece. Decorative enrichment is achieved through a refined combination of classical restraint and delicately modelled ornament. Floral garlands together with finely executed acroterial motifs at the handle mounts introduce an added degree of elegance while subtly foreshadowing the decorative vocabulary that would later develop into the Historicist style.
