An elegant Russian rock crystal solifleur vase, created in St Petersburg at the turn of the 20th century, represents a refined example of decorative glassmaking and Russian silversmithing from the final decades of the Imperial period. The body is executed in clear cut crystal with finely faceted diamond-cut decoration, creating a brilliant play of light while emphasizing the graceful proportions of the vessel.
The neck is mounted with an 84 standard silver collar, finely chased with flowing floral ornament characteristic of the period. The composition is further enhanced by cabochon-cut sapphires delicately integrated into the silver mount. The harmonious combination of transparent crystal, finely worked silver and the deep blue gemstones creates a luxurious decorative effect characteristic of the finest Russian decorative arts at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Small solifleur vases of this type were designed to display a single flower or flowering branch and formed an elegant feature of fashionable interiors, including ladies boudoirs, reception rooms and writing cabinets. Owing to their refined craftsmanship and sophisticated decorative design, such objects were highly appreciated by discerning patrons of the Imperial capital.
