A finely carved hardstone miniature of a hippopotamus executed in the style of Fabergé from natural nephrite, dating to the 20th century. The sculpture depicts the animal standing with its mouth slightly open, convincingly conveying its characteristic mass, strength, and tranquil presence. The composition is distinguished by its compact, sculptural volume, while the carefully modelled head, ears, spine, and closely held tail demonstrate exceptional craftsmanship.
The artist selected a piece of nephrite whose natural colour and veining faithfully evoke the texture of the hippopotamuss hide. The highly polished surface enhances the depth of colour and reveals the inherent beauty of the stone. The tusks are masterfully carved from mammoth ivory, while the darker areas of the nephrite at the feet reinforce the sculptures remarkable naturalism. This refined combination of materials is characteristic of the finest traditions of the Russian hardstone carving school.
The work was created in the style of the celebrated animal carvings associated with the House of Fabergé, where exceptional attention was devoted to the selection of ornamental stones, expressive modelling, and the lifelike interpretation of animal subjects. An artists signature is carved on one of the feet, attesting to the individuality of the work.
