An original coloured glass sculpture entitled Sailor, created in Riga by the renowned glass artist Anatoly Grishchenko (born 1946). The work belongs to the artists celebrated Sailors series, in which he creates expressive anthropomorphic figures combining decorative stylisation, subtle humour and a masterful command of contemporary studio glass.
The sculpture is executed in freely hot-worked multilayer coloured glass. The composition depicts a stylised male portrait with elongated facial proportions, expressive applied eyes, boldly modelled eyebrows, an elongated red nose and sculpturally formed lips. The figure is crowned by a distinctive broad-brimmed sailors hat in cobalt-blue glass surmounted by a red finial. The internal structure of the glass is enriched with numerous trapped air bubbles and subtle transitions of milky white, amber-orange and cobalt-blue tones, creating exceptional optical depth and a vibrant play of light across the surface. The sculpture is mounted on a substantial rectangular base of transparent cobalt-blue glass, reinforcing its strong vertical composition and elegant silhouette.
The work is a characteristic example of Anatoly Grishchenkos original sculptural language, in which the traditions of European studio glass are united with expressive stylisation and refined decorative aesthetics. This sculpture is of particular interest to collectors of contemporary art glass and would constitute an impressive addition to either a private collection or a museum holding.
