An exceptional English silver-plated wine cooler dating from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century, reflecting the Historicist fascination with the forms of Classical antiquity. Executed in silver-plated metal, the piece takes the form of a monumental antique krater with elegantly modelled twin handles.

The body is richly ornamented with finely cast acanthus leaves, floral motifs and stylised foliate garlands, displaying a remarkable level of sculptural refinement. Its harmonious proportions, balanced symmetry and crisply defined relief decoration lend the piece an imposing and ceremonial presence.

The front of the vessel is engraved with an aristocratic coat of arms, executed in traditional burin engraving. This heraldic device suggests that the cooler either formed part of a distinguished family service or was commissioned specifically for a noble household. Wine coolers of this type were an essential element of formal table settings in English country houses and grand town residences, combining practical function with exceptional decorative appeal.

The present example is a characteristic work of English decorative metalwork from the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, when classically inspired designs enjoyed particular favour among affluent patrons.
