A gold coin with a face value of 20 francs, struck in France in 1896 during the period of the French Third Republic. The coin is fashioned from 900 fineness gold and belongs to one of the most recognisable and sought-after issues of late nineteenth-century French gold coinage. The obverse bears a profile portrait of the allegorical figure of the French Republic, designed by the distinguished French medallist Jules-Clément Chaplain. The surrounding legend reads: “RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE”. The reverse depicts the Gallic cockerel, a national symbol of France, standing with its head raised. It is accompanied by the denomination “20 FRANCS”, the date “1896”, and the national motto “LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ”. Owing to its substantial gold content and the international recognition of the series, the coin is of considerable interest both to collectors of French numismatics and to investors.
