A desk lectern (book stand), crafted in gilt bronze and brass, represents a decorative object intended for refined interiors and collecting purposes from the first half of the 20th century. The construction consists of an adjustable inclined book support and a rectangular base with openwork sides executed using artistic piercing and casting techniques.
The openwork decoration of the body is composed of a repeating foliate motif, creating a sense of lightness within the metal structure. The upper panel, with its warm golden brass tone, features a restrained design that emphasises the noble character of the material. The corners of the base are adorned with relief decorative feet incorporating vegetal elements, characteristic of objects of decorative and applied arts created in historical styles.
Similar desk lecterns were used in libraries, studies and refined interiors for displaying books, albums, manuscripts and valuable collector’s editions.
