MANTEL CLOCK THE MOUNTED HUSSAR. FRANCE, MID-19TH CENTURY

An impressive French mantel clock executed in the expressive Romantic style of the mid-19th century. The composition is surmounted by a dynamic bronze figure of a mounted hussar charging up a rugged rocky slope. Depicted on a rearing horse with drawn sabre, the rider conveys exceptional energy and dramatic intensity.

The distinctive Hungarian shako and military attire reflect the widespread fascination within European Romanticism with the figure of the Hungarian hussar, regarded as one of the most enduring symbols of heroism and martial valour during the mid-19th century. Such allegorical compositions became a hallmark of French decorative arts, embodying the periods fascination with historical narratives and military subjects.

Despite its frontal presentation, the sculptural group is conceived asymmetrically, creating a compelling impression of vigorous movement. The clock case is richly ornamented with relief decoration inspired by the French Renaissance Revival, a characteristic feature of French artistic bronze production of the mid-19th century.
