THREE BOULLE STYLE PEDESTALS WITH MARQUETRY DECORATION FRANCE, 20TH CENTURY
An impressive set of three decorative pedestals executed in the tradition of the celebrated French Boulle style. The architectural composition of each pedestal is inspired by the grand ceremonial furnishings of the Louis XIV period and is distinguished by its monumental silhouette, sculptural forms, and richly ornamented surfaces. Crafted from ebonised wood, the pedestals are embellished with intricate marquetry composed of engraved brass and pewter, forming elaborate ornamental arrangements of acanthus leaves, scrolling foliage, cartouches, and symmetrical arabesques.Particularly striking are the large volutes adorning the sides, recalling the decorative consoles found in Baroque palace interiors. The upper section is crowned by a substantial entablature enriched with a deeply carved frieze of acanthus leaves and stylised palmettes. The contrast between the black polished ground, silvery metallic inlays, and gilded ornamental motifs creates the luxurious visual effect characteristic of Boulle furniture. The bases are further enhanced with rosettes and decorative mounts imitating finely chased bronze.Thanks to their architectural elegance and high quality of execution, these pedestals were conceived for the display of sculpture, vases, clocks, candelabra, and other works of decorative art. The ensemble may be used as a unified decorative group or as individual statement pieces while maintaining the integrity of the overall design.Material: Wood, brass, pewter, and mixed metal alloys.Dimensions: Height 120 cm; Width 55 cm; Depth 45 cm.Condition: Good.

SILVER CIGARETTE CASE WITH ENAMEL DECOR OF PEONIES AND A BIRD JAPAN, EARLY 20TH CENTURY
An exquisite silver cigarette case of rectangular form with softly rounded corners, executed in the finest traditions of Japanese decorative arts of the early twentieth century. The body is adorned with finely modelled relief decoration enriched with polychrome enamels depicting blooming peonies, a songbird, butterflies, and flowering branches.The obverse presents an elaborate composition centred around a large fully blossomed peony, accompanied by a second flower below and a small bird perched among flowering branches. The reverse is decorated with a more restrained arrangement featuring a blooming peony and two butterflies in flight. The enamel work is rendered in a delicate palette of lilac, white, green, yellow, and blue tones, enhancing the sculptural quality of the relief and lending the composition a painterly elegance. The meticulous treatment of petals, buds, and foliage demonstrates a remarkable level of craftsmanship.In Japanese artistic tradition, the peony is regarded as a symbol of wealth, prosperity, honour, and elevated social status. Birds and butterflies are associated with harmony, joy, longevity, and happiness. Together, these motifs create an auspicious composition characteristic of Japanese decorative arts of the Meiji and Taishō periods.The interior is finely polished and retains its original silk retaining straps. The exceptional quality of the chasing, relief modelling, and enamel decoration places this work among the characteristic examples of Japanese artistic silver from the early twentieth century.Marks: Character mark «純銀» (Jun Gin) meaning “pure silver”; engraved artist’s signature «光一» (Kōichi / Koichi).Dimensions: Length: 8.5 cm; Width: 6.5 cm; Height: 1.5 cm.Weight: 95 g.Condition: Good. Minor traces of age and use consistent with the period. The enamel decoration is well preserved. Light surface scratches and a natural patina of age are present.Provenance: Private European collection.

A rare silver cigarette case of rectangular form with hinged cover, executed in the refined traditions of Japanese decorative art of the Meiji period. The cover is ornamented with an elegant repoussé composition depicting a pair of hares beneath a blossoming cherry branch. The flowers and foliage are highlighted with polychrome enamels in shades of yellow, white, green and soft pink, creating a delicate painterly effect against the silver ground.The composition embodies the asymmetry, restraint and poetic sensitivity characteristic of Japanese aesthetics. The animals are rendered with remarkable softness and naturalism, while the generous use of negative space reflects the influence of traditional Japanese painting and decorative design. The cover bears the artists signature in the form of the characters 光雅 (Kōga), likely representing the artistic name of the designer or workshop responsible for the model.The interior retains a smooth polished finish. This object represents a fine example of Japanese export silver from the Meiji era, created for the international market and subsequently assayed in Great Britain.Marks: Importers or retailers mark LY & Co; British sterling silver hallmark with Lion Passant; date letter d; registration mark F; London Assay Office mark depicting the Leopards Head.
