Sapphire is a precious variety of corundum (Al₂O₃), traditionally associated with blue coloration, caused primarily by trace elements of iron and titanium. It has a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, a vitreous lustre and excellent durability. In addition to blue, sapphires occur in a wide range of colours. The principal factors in gemmological and market assessment are colour, clarity, carat weight, the nature of inclusions, the presence or absence of treatment, and geographic origin.
