A rare collectible example of Norwegian jewellery art in the spirit of national romanticism — a silver-gilt drinking bowl with horse heads, created by the eminent master Marius Hammer in Bergen. Made of 930 silver, the oval-shaped bowl is entirely covered, inside and out, with a fine layer of gilding that enhances the richness and status of the piece. The body is decorated with intricate cloisonné enamel in a palette of blue, white, and green, forming a band of floral rosettes and stylised leaves. At opposite ends of the rim are sculptural horse heads adorned with black-and-white striped enamel, evoking the iconography of ancient Scandinavian dragon-prowed ships. The piece demonstrates the highest level of craftsmanship in working with metal, gilding, and enamel, characteristic of the “Viking Revival” style, and stands as a fine example of Nordic decorative tradition at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries.

Marius Hammer (1847–1927) was one of Norway’s most renowned jewellers of the late 19th – early 20th century, celebrated for his technical perfection and deep respect for national motifs. His Bergen workshop produced silver pieces with gilding, cloisonné enamel, and filigree, drawing inspiration from Norwegian folklore and archaeological finds from the Viking Age. The late 19th century in Norway was marked by national romanticism, when artists and craftsmen sought to highlight the country’s historic identity by incorporating motifs from longships, wood carvings, and ancient Scandinavian ornamentation. In northern tradition, the bratina (drinking bowl) symbolised community and festivity, while horse heads embodied strength, endurance, and a heroic heritage. This gilded drinking bowl combines refined aesthetics, exceptional craftsmanship, and cultural significance, making it an outstanding artefact of Norwegian applied arts from the turn of the 19th–20th centuries.

Exceptional preservation, with perfectly intact gilding and enamel, no losses or damage. Clear marks, minimal signs of age.
