A large Russian carved wooden letter opener executed in 1918 in the Russian Art Nouveau style. This remarkable object is an outstanding example of early twentieth-century decorative woodcarving, uniting practical function with the expressive quality of small-scale sculpture.

The handle is masterfully carved as the monumental figure of a voevoda, rendered almost fully in the round and turned in a three-quarter pose. The thoughtful expression, powerful facial features and finely modelled beard convey the image of the legendary Russian warrior and defender. The richly ornamented helmet with flowing locks enhances the dynamism of the composition and reflects the distinctive artistic language of Russian Art Nouveau, which combined the national epic tradition with the sculptural innovations of the period.

The blade is elegantly shaped with a long leaf-form profile tapering to a refined point, preserving the harmonious proportions of the object. The wood is finished with a deep dark stain that accentuates both the carving and the natural grain. The confident modelling and exceptional craftsmanship suggest the work of an accomplished professional woodcarver, possibly associated with an artistic workshop or carving atelier.

Created during the pivotal year of 1918, this object embodies the final flowering of Russian Art Nouveau. It reflects the continued fascination with medieval Russian history, heroic symbolism and national romanticism, standing as a compelling artistic testament to the final years of the pre-revolutionary decorative tradition.
