An expressive marine drawing attributed to the distinguished Russian marine painter Alexei Petrovich Bogoliubov (1824-1896), depicting a dramatic scene of shipwreck and the rescue of people during a violent storm. The work is distinguished by its complex composition, exceptional precision in the rendering of ships` rigging and a masterful combination of graphic and painterly techniques.

At the centre of the composition, a sailing vessel flying the French tricolour struggles through towering waves. To the left, a boat carrying several figures is depicted, while to the right a partially submerged vessel appears with its fallen mast and damaged rigging. The listing ships, surging waves, gathering storm clouds and silhouettes of seabirds create a powerful sense of the struggle between man and the elements.

The technique is of particular interest. Working on grey-toned paper, the artist combines rich dark washes with exceptionally delicate graphite detailing and expressive touches of white heightening to suggest the foam of breaking waves, sea spray and reflections of light. The construction of the vessels, their masts, spars and rigging are rendered with a degree of technical accuracy characteristic of an artist who had received a naval education and possessed first-hand experience of service at sea.

The almost entirely monochromatic composition is enlivened by a single vivid colour accent: the French flag, picked out in blue and red watercolour. This striking detail heightens the dramatic tension of the scene and emphasises the work`s connection with the French themes present in Bogoliubov`s oeuvre.

A faintly legible signature reading Боголюбовъ appears in the lower right corner, executed with a fine drawing instrument.

The work is presented in a decorative wooden frame, with a mount and under glass.

Material: Grey-toned paper.

Medium: Mixed media, probably ink or black watercolour, graphite, white bodycolour and selective touches of coloured watercolour.

Signature: Lower right, apparently signed Боголюбовъ.

Dimensions: Approximately 30 × 20 cm.

Condition: Minor signs of age to the paper support. The composition and colour accents appear visually well preserved.

Provenance: Private European collection, held in the collection since the 1960s.

Alexei Petrovich Bogoliubov (1824-1896) occupies a distinguished position in the history of nineteenth-century Russian art as a marine painter, a master of naval battle scenes, a professional naval officer and one of the foremost exponents of realist landscape painting. Educated at the Naval Cadet Corps and having served in the Imperial Russian Navy, the artist acquired an exceptional understanding of sailing vessels, navigation and the behaviour of ships under varying sea conditions. This combination of practical maritime experience and academic artistic training was fundamental to the distinctive character of his work.

Bogoliubov entered the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1850 and completed his studies in 1853, receiving the Academy`s prestigious Great Gold Medal. During his subsequent European study travels, he encountered the artistic traditions of the Düsseldorf and French schools and was influenced by Andreas Achenbach and Eugène Isabey. Direct observation of nature, sensitivity to atmospheric effects and the desire to unite documentary accuracy with the emotional expressiveness of marine landscape painting played a particularly important role in shaping his artistic language.

During the 1860s, storms, sailing ships and dramatic events at sea occupied an important place in Bogoliubov`s oeuvre. The artist combined the precision of naval painting with a dynamic treatment of waves, clouds and changing light. In his works on paper, he explored a variety of media, drawing upon the expressive possibilities of pencil, ink, watercolour and white bodycolour. Such techniques enabled him to convey both the structural complexity of ships and the constantly changing character of the natural elements.

An important collection of Bogoliubov`s graphic works is preserved in the Saratov State Art Museum named after A. N. Radishchev, founded by the artist himself in 1885. The museum`s holdings include numerous drawings, watercolours, landscape studies and marine subjects representing different periods of his artistic career.

Of particular interest is the French theme, which appears repeatedly in Bogoliubov`s work. The French tricolour flying from the mast of the sailing vessel in the present drawing relates it to his marine compositions of the 1860s. According to the observations of art historian L. V. Pashkova, a closely related thematic comparison may be found in a painting by Bogoliubov dated 1864, held in the collection of the Vladimir-Suzdal Museum-Reserve.

The present drawing brings together characteristic qualities of the nineteenth-century Russian school of marine painting: an accurate understanding of ship construction, sophisticated spatial composition and the Romantic expressiveness of a storm-tossed seascape.
