Cast bronze icon, 2nd half of the 19th century, Russian Empire.
The icon`s centerpiece depicts a half-length image of Saint Nicholas in full bishop`s vestments. In his left hand, on a cloth, he holds an open Gospel, while his right hand is raised in a gesture of blessing. To the left and right of his face are depicted the half-figures of Christ and the Mother of God in the clouds, handing the saint the Gospel and omophorion.
The veneration of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was widespread in Rus`; the number of churches dedicated to him and icons painted was the largest after that of the Mother of God.
