The portrait Russian Beauty is attributed to Timofey Mikhailovich Matveev (1856–1897) and dated 1888, exemplifying the academic painting tradition of late 19th-century Russia. Trained at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, Matveev turned to the rare Russian genre of the female nude, elevating it from a classroom exercise to an independent artistic statement.The composition is restrained: the young woman is set against a dark neutral background, emphasizing the plasticity of her body and the psychological expressiveness of her gaze. Above her head, a subtle highlight suggests an allusion to the halo familiar in Russian iconography, transforming the figure into a hymn to feminine purity. At the same time, this effect may be interpreted as Matveev’s fascination with mythology and the European tradition of depicting Venus.The rarity of nude subjects in 19th-century Russian painting lends this work exceptional significance. The strict academic system and prevailing moral codes rarely permitted such images beyond the walls of the Academy. The present work, bearing Matveev’s signature and the date “T.M. A Russian silver spoon with a vivid painted enamel composition titled “Troika”, executed in the characteristic artistic manner of the late 19th century in the workshop of Vasily Ivanovich Kangin. The oval bowl features a dynamic genre scene depicting a Russian troika rushing through a winter landscape. The composition is distinguished by a rich and saturated colour palette and the careful rendering of the horses, the coachman, and the passengers. The contrast between the cinnabar-red background and the light snowy ground enhances the decorative effect and emphasises the high level of miniature enamel painting.The handle of the spoon is formed as a stylised tree trunk and surmounted by an expressive sculptural figure of a climbing bear. This animal motif, traditionally associated with the image of Russia, was particularly sought after in Russian decorative and applied arts at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The modelling of the handle demonstrates a high quality of casting and chasing, with finely detailed textures of bark and animal fur. The interior of the bowl is fully gilded, lending the object a ceremonial character while simultaneously providing a protective function.Marks: Saint Petersburg assay marks with the silver standard “84”, dating to 1899-1908; maker’s mark “VK” – Vasily Ivanovich Kangin.Dimensions: Length 20 cm; bowl width 4.2 cm.Weight: 61 g.Condition: Good. Gilding evenly preserved. Enamel painting without losses or chips. Minor signs of wear consistent with the age of the object.Provenance: Private collection.

Large, copper-cast icon of the Smolensk Mother of God in an icon case. Betrays the canonical, semi-figured image of the Mother of God with a baby in her arms. The rare casting format preserves the high-quality detailing of the clothes, the gestures of the saints, the foliage and floral patterns on the margins of the icon and Mary’s halo. The color program of the monument is interesting: combining the natural nature of the blue, endless sky and green organic foliage in the background of the icon. And also yellow, consider the golden color, blooming on the dark nimbus of the Virgin Mary. White, as a sign of purity, forms the titles, the cross-shaped halo of Jesus and the flowers in the margins of the icon. Copper-bronze alloy. Hot enamels 5 colors. Good original condition.
