GILT BRONZE FIREPLACE SCREEN IN THE LOUIS XV STYLE FRANCE, 19TH CENTURY

An impressive gilt bronze fireplace screen, representing a refined example of French decorative arts of the 19th century, executed in the Louis XV style. The composition is conceived in the characteristic asymmetrical Rococo manner, with flowing, sinuous lines and a richly modelled relief. The openwork bronze frame is decorated with dynamic acanthus scrolls, rocaille motifs and cartouches, forming a complex yet harmonious silhouette. The central section is fitted with a metal mesh, designed to protect the interior from sparks while simultaneously enhancing the decorative character of the object. The screen rests on elegantly curved feet, providing both stability and visual lightness. The quality of casting and the careful execution of details indicate the work of a professional French workshop oriented toward high standards of interior decoration.Marks: None observed.Dimensions: Height 74.5 cm. Width 76 cm.Condition: Good, with traces of age and use.Provenance: France.

INKWELL WITH A FIGURE OF PAN FRANCE, EARLY 19TH CENTURY

A large desk inkwell executed in the French Neoclassical tradition of the early 19th century, featuring an expressive sculptural composition depicting the god Pan seated on a stool and playing the double flute (syrinx). The figure is conceived in a refined, intimate manner characteristic of post-Napoleonic Neoclassicism, with emphasis on harmonious proportions, fluid lines, and a poetic interpretation of an Antique subject.The figure is cast in bronze with high-quality fire gilding. Particular attention is paid to anatomical accuracy, facial expression, hair, and drapery, softly enveloping the body and enhancing the sense of movement. Pan’s pose lacks the monumental rigidity of the Empire style and instead conveys liveliness and musical expressiveness, consistent with Neoclassical aesthetics enriched by early Romantic sensibilities.The base is carved from solid green marble with a vivid natural veining. The composition incorporates two symmetrically arranged inkwells with hinged lids surmounted by pinecone finials, a traditional Antique motif symbolizing fertility, vitality, and harmony with nature. The inkwells retain their original glass liners, preserved and suitable for practical use. The marble base rests on gilt bronze architectural feet, providing stability and a sense of formal completeness.Dimensions: Height 28 cm; Width 32 cm; Depth 23 cm.Materials: Gilt bronze; green marble; glass.Condition: Very good. Gilding largely preserved. Minor signs of age consistent with period. Marble without chips or evidence of restoration.Provenance: Private European collection.
