A poetic and rare sheet from the flourishing period of Pavel Kuznetsov’s Symbolist painting, belonging to his celebrated “Steppe Cycle” of the 1910s. The composition is structured through broad horizontals, where the vault of the sky dominates the pictorial space and dissolves into subtle transitions of azure, lilac-pink and pearlescent tones. The low horizon, with barely indicated outlines of shepherds’ huts and rounded haystacks, evokes the boundless steppe and a contemplative stillness.The chromatic structure of the work is based on a refined contrast between cool celestial planes and warm ochre-golden expanses of land. The soft tempera technique on cardboard lends the surface a velvety texture and an inner luminosity characteristic of the artist’s works of this period. The laconic treatment of form and the generalized silhouette enhance the Symbolist nature of the image, in which a real motif is transformed into a poetic vision of space.The work is signed and dated on the reverse in ink: “Koshary. The lyrical landscape In the Park, executed by Anna Petrovna Ostroumova-Lebedeva circa 1900, belongs to the early period of her independent artistic development, when the artist signed her works as “A. Ostroumova”. This intimate watercolor reveals the master’s refined sense of spatial construction and the rhythmic organization of natural forms.The composition unfolds through a sequence of horizontal planes: the calm surface of a pond in the foreground, gently modelled lawns and a group of dark fir trees at the centre, beyond which emerges the golden-ochre foliage of an autumn park. The sky is rendered with broad transparent washes of blue and greyish tones, creating a sensation of humid air and atmospheric depth. The palette demonstrates a subtle harmony of greens, ochres and blues characteristic of the St Petersburg graphic school of the early 20th century.The work reflects the influence of European Art Nouveau and the pictorial explorations of the fin de siècle, as well as the artist’s academic training under Vasily Maté, Ilya Repin and Pavel Chistyakov. A vibrant and ironic work by the contemporary German multimedia artist Felix von Altersheim, executed in the aesthetic of Neo-Pop Art.
