André-Charles Boulle was the foremost French ébéniste, bronzier and chaser of the reign of Louis XIV, widely recognised as the greatest master of French Baroque furniture. As Premier Ébéniste du Roi, working from the royal workshops at the Louvre, he perfected the celebrated marquetry technique combining tortoiseshell, brass and other precious materials, which became the defining hallmark of French furniture from the late seventeenth to the early eighteenth century.
