SALT THRONE WITH PROVERB RUSSIA, LATE 19TH – EARLY 20TH CENTURY

An elegant salt cellar in the form of a throne, made of metal with silver plating. The openwork backrest is decorated with stylised ornaments featuring birds and floral motifs. The seat bears an engraved inscription in Old Slavonic style: “Without salt, without bread, half the meal is lost.” The hinged inner part reveals a cover engraved with a rooster amidst vegetation. The side walls and base are adorned with geometric ornaments of interlacing lines in the characteristic “Russian” style.
