The restless green of the grass and the impenetrable whiteness divide the picture in half, separating the unknown and the life. On this line, a Cossack is depicted in a tangible and contrasting manner, peering into danger and uncertainty. All questions of the alienation of this war, the unknown of revolutions, and, in general, the eternal question of the future of Russia is depicted in this work.

Сюжет картины отталкивается от событий Русско-Японской войны, и посвящен осмыслению ее итогов и целей, шире - будущности России, вступившей в трагические годы революций; судьбе страны в целом.Казачий разъезд, привстав в седле, тревожно всматривается в пелену дождя.Мятущаяся зелень травы и непроницаемая белизна делят картину пополам, разделяя неизвестность и жизнь. На этой линии ощутимо и контрастно изображен казак, всматривающийся в опасность и неизвестность. Все вопросы чуждости этой войны, неизведанности революций и в целом извечный вопрос о будущности России звучит в данной работ.
