SILVER-GILT DRINKING BOWL WITH HORSE HEADS NORWAY, MARIUS HAMMER WORKSHOP, BERGEN, LATE 19TH – EARLY 20TH CENTURY

A rare collectible example of Norwegian jewellery art in the spirit of national romanticism — a silver-gilt drinking bowl with horse heads, created by the eminent master Marius Hammer in Bergen. Made of 930 silver, the oval-shaped bowl is entirely covered, inside and out, with a fine layer of gilding that enhances the richness and status of the piece. The body is decorated with intricate cloisonné enamel in a palette of blue, white, and green, forming a band of floral rosettes and stylised leaves. At opposite ends of the rim are sculptural horse heads adorned with black-and-white striped enamel, evoking the iconography of ancient Scandinavian dragon-prowed ships. The piece demonstrates the highest level of craftsmanship in working with metal, gilding, and enamel, characteristic of the “Viking Revival” style, and stands as a fine example of Nordic decorative tradition at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries.

Marks: Maker’s mark (Marius Hammer), 930S (indicating silver content — 93%).
Dimensions: Diameter: 14.5 cm.
Weight: 187 g.
Condition: Excellent, gilding and enamel preserved, without losses or cracks.
Provenance: Norway, Marius Hammer workshop, Bergen.
