MAHOGANY AND GILT-BRONZE DISPLAY CABINET. FRANÇOIS LINKE. FRANCE, LATE 19TH CENTURY

A magnificent three-door display cabinet created by the legendary French workshop of François Linke, epitomising the luxury and refinement of late 19th-century decorative art. Crafted from fine mahogany and richly adorned with gilt-bronze ornamentation.

The central door presents an elegant gilt-bronze composition over veneered wood with marquetry elements. At its centre stands a muse holding a musical instrument, symbolising the art of music. The figure rises upon a fountain-shaped pedestal surrounded by finely modelled nymphs. The composition is enhanced with festoons, vases overflowing with fruit, and crowned by a pair of paradise birds carrying a floral garland of roses and lilies.

The upper frieze is decorated with garlands, playful satyrs, and musical grotesques, creating a vivid scene of classical symbolism. The corners are embellished with substantial gilt-bronze mounts featuring mascarons and floral motifs. The cabinet’s refined detail and the crisp chasing of its bronze ornament demonstrate the artist’s extraordinary craftsmanship.

The top is surmounted by a light Carrara marble slab with green veining, harmoniously complementing the warm tones of the mahogany. The side panels with bevelled glass doors accentuate the cabinet’s graceful silhouette, while mirrored back panels and glass shelves create a sense of depth and light within the display. The piece rests on delicate tapered legs with gilt-bronze decorations.
