Nevrev Nikolai Vasilievich. 1830-1904. An outstanding Russian painter, one of the key figures of the Association of Traveling Exhibitions, author of textbook genre paintings of the 19th century.
A graduate of the Moscow School of Painting and Sculpture in 1855, he became famous for the following works:
"Memorial service at the rural cemetery" (1865), "Protodeacon proclaiming many years at merchants′ name days" (1866; State Tretyakov Gallery), "From the recent past" (1866; State Tretyakov Gallery), "Inheritance after an official", "Wanderer in a merchant′s family ”,“ Voevoda ”,“ Two friends ”,“ Section by inheritance ”(1889; at the Tretyakov Gallery) and“ Matchmaking ”(1889).
Since 1881 it has been affiliated with the Association of Traveling Exhibitions. The last years of his life he was in great need. Out of despair, he shot himself in 1904 in his Mogilev estate, Lyskovshchina.
